Curriculum

The academic curriculum at Plaza Heights Christian Academy Preschool is the A Beka Christian Curriculum. The A Beka curriculum is an accelerated Christian curriculum that has had continued success in the area of Christian education for many years. It is designed to lay an early foundation of learning for young children. We believe that introducing basic academics in a well-structured preschool program setting helps make the transition to kindergarten much easier on the child as well as the parent.

Pre-K Curriculum
Bible:
Children are taught basic Bible stories and scripture memorization. We believe that God’s Word is the most important part of teaching and training children. “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Letters:
We review each letter and its phonetic sound and introduce beginning phonics rules which are the foundation for reading. The children are also taught what are called “blend ladders”. A blend ladder is the “blending” of two letters together and the resulting sound.

Numbers:
  • count numbers 1-100 and recognize numbers 1-30
  • count to 100 by 5’s and 10’s
  • “before” and “after” numbers
  • whole and half
  • identifying money: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
  • tell time on the hour
Concepts:
Children are taught left/right, up/down, over/under, above/below, etc.

Rhyming and poetry:
Teaching rhyming helps increase language skills in children.

Comparing:
Children learn same and different, greater or smaller, etc.

Science:
Teaching science introduces the children to God’s world and teaches us to become aware of the changes around us. Topics such as nature, weather, our five senses and how to have a healthy body are units that we teach.

Music:
Children go to music class twice a week. Through Musikgarten curriculum, they are introduced to movement, rhythm, tonal matching, poetry, classical and folk music, finger plays and percussion instruments.

Library:
Children visit the PHCA library once a week for story time. They also learn about library rules and how to check out books.
